Researchers have calculated the properties of carbyne, a

form of carbon that is stronger, stiffer and more exotic than

anything else chemists have seen before. The material is

twice as hard as carbon sheet, needs more energy to break

than a diamond and is also quite flexible. It is composed of a

chain of carbon atoms linked by alternate triple and single

bonds or consecutive double bonds.
