Greek students won NASA’s International Space Apps 

Challenge with a self-supporting greenhouse that grows 

spinach in 45 days. Named Popeye, the greenhouse has a 

solar-powered system that provides water and carbon 

dioxide to the plants. Although we are still decades away 

from colonising Mars, this invention has the potential to 

supply astronauts on the red planet with food.
